I recently took a trip to visit my parents and brought along my Wii U. Before i left, my Wii U had no troubles with anything related to the internet. While i was at my parents house, i set up my Wii U and was able to play online without issue. Upon returning and setting up my Wii U in the same location, trying to connect to Monster Hunter's online servers gave me "Could not retrieve World information." Checking my Friends List gives me the error 101-0502, "Could not connect to the server."
However, i can connect to the eShop, check for system updates, use the Wii U's browser, and check Miiverse posts. I can also download DLC from Monster Hunter's servers.
I called tech support and between their guidance and my own tinkering, these are the steps we've taken:
- Deleted all connections and created a brand new one.
- Checked Nintendo's server statuses (a friend of mine was waiting for me online, so i had little hope there was anything wrong with Nintendo's servers).
- Tried to connect with a different Nintendo Network ID.
- Manually set IPs and DNS servers (to the standard 8.8.8.8/8.8.6.6, my computer's DNS servers, and a special one the tech gave me).
- Went into my router to put the Wii U into DMZ, forwarded all ports to my Wii U, turned off Firewall, reset the router's protocol to b/g, g/n, b/g/n, and changed the channels on which it operates (testing between each setting change).
- After all the above, turned my Wii U and my Router off and unplugged them for 10 minutes, then turned everything back on again.
After all of this, and many times interspersed throughout all these steps, i am still encountering the same issues. Cannot connect to Friends List, cannot connect to Monster Hunter's multiplayer servers, but have access to all other online functionality for both the console and Monster Hunter.
Does anyone else have any suggestions? I'm going to take it to a friend's house tomorrow to test if i can connect to the network there.
UPDATE: The problem has been resolved for me. After coming home from work, turning on my Wii U and going directly to my friends list connected me without issue. Perhaps there was a very specific issue with Comcast users in my area?
