Wii remotes temporarily lose connection

While playing Super Mario Bros U last night, my brother and I noticed that our remotes would periodically lose connection for a second, causing user input to be ignored/missed by the game.  After trying to play for 30 minutes we got frustrated and gave up.

Symptoms:

  • Remotes lose connection and become temporarily unresponsive.
  • When it occurs, connection loss is typically very short (a second or two at most), but creates a noticeable in loss control in a game
  • Connection loss is frequent enough to make playing a game very difficult
  • Often when the problem occurs, the remote 'position' lights will blink like it is syncing with the system, but this behavior is not always seen
  • Both remotes (when using two) often fail at the same time
  • Problem is seen across all platforms (Wii U games, Wii U Virtual console, Wii emulator and virtual console), but seems to be most noticible when playing on the Wii U vs the Wii emulator.

I have already done the following:

  • Replaced the batteries in both remotes
  • Reset Wii U console
  • Turned off and unplugged Wii U console
  • Re-synced remotes during game play
  • Verified that issue is not seen on game pad

Has anyone else experienced an issue like this before?  I tried doing a google search but most of what I found was related to the gamepad being unresponsive, not the remotes.  Also, upon reconnecting my main remote after testing the gamepad the problem seems to be either less noticible, or much less frequent as I was able to play an entire level of SMBU without noticing a loss of control.
