Wii fit meter issues/questions

Question for anyone who has a wii fit meter, what exactly determines when it resets for the day? Do I need to reset it myself? Me and my mom seem to be having issues (my mom moreso it seems).

heres how it usually goes for my mom:
-do stuff for the day
-register it in the evening around 6pm
-let it sit from then until I wake up around 10am
-it still shows walking from the previous day added on
-look at it a few hours later and everything it wiped and it only shows me walking a few hundred steps

and when I register it on the wii u it shouls blank for majority of the day and shows walking at 2-4am when she is always asleep.

I've noticed it did almost the same to me as well but to a lesser extent..it seems to reset a little faster after I use it but it still resets itself in the middle of use.

I've also noticed a massive difference in the amount of burned calories/walking ratio between the two of us. from my understanding the way it works is the heavier you are the more you burn by walking compared to someone of average weight. for me a male at 5'7 (22 years old) 152lbs I do around 3k steps (general walking from the computer and back usually) and it says I burn around 200+ calories. My mom at 5'0 150lbs (usually considered overweight with the height) does around 7k steps which includes a 30 minute decently paced walk and a 20 minute treadmil walk at 2.7 mph (which also makes me think the step out should be more) barley gets up to 300 calories burned for the day.

does this mean its defective? I see nothing on how this thing resets anywhere. I feel Nintendo went overboard on this whole simplicity thing for this.

so at this moment I did a reset and profile switch for each of our meters to see if I get different results. I just really wish there was more info on how this thing works out there. It is so hard to find stuff even on google.
