I HAVE A POINT AFTER THIS PARAGRAPH. BUT THE FIRST PARAGRAPH IS A RANT.
I personally think it's a bunch of **** that nintendo's "Deluxe" WiiU only has 32GB os storage space. I mean, that's a good amount of space for say, a phone. But actual retail games clock in at aroung 10-11GB EACH, and 32GB is the DELUXE set? cool so we can buy two games and then MAYBE have enough space left to save both of them.
Anyway. I obviously want to use some kind of external storage for my wii u since the internal one isnt going to cut it. And i KNOW nintendo always has some stupid, rediculous rules about everything regaurding taking data off of their systems, or transfering their data in any way shape or form, so I know its no way gonna be as simple as plugging in my external hard drive.
I rememeber reading something at one point that said that in order to use an external hard drive as storage, you had to delete every piece of data from that hard drive permanently. This seems EXACTLY like the stupid, pointless regulations that nintendo would have us do, but i wanted to confirm that it was true.
Also, I know nintendo is a BIG fan of limiting thier customers to one system at a time. Like how there has NEVER been a time since the gamecube era where the simple task of transferring save data from an old system to a new system was actually easy. I think to keep my 300+ hours of save on Brawl from my old broken wii to my new wii, I actually had to haclk the dang thing. And now theres the whole thing where you can only have your nintendo ID registered on ONE 3ds. so if you buy a new one you have to do a complicated system transfer that could potentially wipe all your data, and then your old 3ds becomes a blank slate.
I guess they think that forcing you to get rid of your current $200+ 3ds will make you want to buy a 3ds xl even more? sorry I keep getting off topic. My point was to ask if I could use multiple storage devices to store wiiu data. Theres no way im blowing the money to buy a big 200GB hard drive for this thing, but i might be able to manage if i use a couple of the 20GB flash drives i have lying around. so is there some restriction saying I can only use one flashdrive/harddrive at a time with my wii u? And if I can use multiple, lets say I have two games on one FD and 3 on another. would those FDs basically become like game cartriges for those games or is it more complex than that?
Finally, would my save and game data actually be safe on an external hard drive? Lets say somehow, my Wiiu bites it. its in my suitcase and it gets lost forever at the airport. If i still have my 500GB hard drive that has all of the games and save data on it, would I be able to get a new wiiu and download all of that stuff to it, and it would all be like it nnever happened? or would it say "sorry, this isnt the wiiu that this hard drive belongs to. I guess youre just shafted on this one."
I mean if my wiiu actually gets lost, stolen or destroyed, thered be no way to transfer my NNID to a new wiiu right? so would al my save and game data be totally screwed, even if it were on an external hard drive?
Sorry I asked alot of questions here, and I went off topic so much. I would really appreciate it if someone with experience using these external hard drives for the wiiu could tell me whats up. Thanks alot.
