Wii U not reading discs with smudges?

So I had my Wii U for 3 or 4 weeks now, and every once in a while, it would give me a disc read error. I'd simply eject the disc, wipe it a bit, then put it back in and it would work good as new. That happened about 5 or 6 times before.

Now today, I tried all four of my games, and not a single one worked. Every one of them just stated an invalid disc, even when I wiped away the smudges the best I could with my shirt. To get them to work, I had to get a somewhat softer cloth and wipe them until they were as oil free as they were going to be. Even then, I thought I noticed a slight stutter occassionally. Do the discs have to be that pristine? I mean, I know there's a similar problem with blu-ray discs having smudges, but I never had it be this prevalent. I feel like the error is only becoming noticable now because I didn't wipe the discs well enough before, so it was sort of an accumlination of the smudges over the weeks.

Could it be the disc drive? I noticed whenever it wouldn't recognize the disc, it would stop spinning to read it 2-5 seconds in. The drive also seems really tight, as it leaves wipeable straight lines on the discs. (Same thing that happens with the 3DS top screen when you close it.) That happening over and over again could lead to disc scratching. Apperently the line thing is common though, so is it just inherent to the model (like the original 3DS stated before)?

Or could the disc drive just be dirty? Enough so that smudges would be a problem?

As a note: None of these games are scratched. They've been kept in pretty much undamageable cases and should be perfect.
