Fit Meter doesn't know it's unregistered.

I found my Fit Meter a few days ago in the laundry room. I'm not sure if it was washed or not, but it seemed to be in good condition. The battery was dead, however, and when I replaced the battery and pressed the button on the front, all I could get was "Connecting..."

I tried syncing it with the Wii U, and it was a little weird. It said something along the lines of, "Calories transferred: 9999999. Calories transferred today: 120." I still couldn't get anything besides "Connecting..." on the fit meter screen. I thought, "Huh. That's weird. Maybe I should see if there's an option to reset it..."

I ended up trying both a "reset" and a "de-register," in that order (I think). So the Wii Fit U wants a Fit Meter before it will function, and the one I have isn't working. I took the battery out, pressed anything that looked like a reset button inside the meter, and put it all back together.

Now, the Fit Meter has my face on it along with all the data that was supposedly wiped clean in the reset/de-register process. It doesn't seem to know it's unregistered, but my Wii Fit U distinctly remembers that I don't have one registered anymore.

I try to register this one and it says, "This is someone else's fit meter. Please register your own or reset this one."

I try to reset this one and it just says, "This is someone else's fit meter."

Does anyone have any ideas on this one? Is there some secret button trick or something on the Fit Meter that can wipe its data? Or maybe something to be done on the Wii Fit U side of the problem?

Google hasn't been much help in this at all. Even the problem of the "preowned Fit Meter" only appears once and is unanswered, though I feel like insights there would be very helpful here.
