I'm hoping somebody might be able to help me. Recently I started running low on available data on my Wii U's hard drive and I resolved to buy an external drive to free up some data space.
Here is the hard drive that I bought --> http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E3RH5W2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00
I've seen other, similar topics on the forums, and the first thing people ask is whether or not it is externally powered, or if it is bus powered (powered by the Wii U itself through the USB port). I can assure you that this item is powered externally via an adapter and plug, and is NOT powered through the Wii U. Please don't suggest that I get a Y cable or something because I do not see how that could possibly help. Furthermore, I remember being directed to this product from this page --> http://kotaku.com/the-best-external-hard-drives-for-your-wii-u-1616444509, which stated that this item was officially endorsed for use with the Nintendo Wii U by the folks at Nintendo itself.
However, since plugging it into the Wii U, I can't seem to get the system to even recognize that an external hard drive is plugged in. I have tried to format it by going through the following menu options:
System Settings >> Data Management >> Format USB Storage Device
It then brings up a screen that reads "This will format the USB storage device so that it can be used with this console. Please note that this will delete all data currently saved to the USB storage device."
Sounds promising. The device is brand new, so the data thing is not a problem. I hit (A) to go to the next screen.
The next screen reads "Ensure that the USB storage device is the only one connected to the console and then hit next"
There are no other storage devices connected, and, in fact, I have specifically unplugged ALL OTHER USB DEViCES (such as controllers) to make sure the process isn't interfered with. I hit (A) to go to the next screen.
The next thing it does is, on the gamepad (note: the TV has read to proceed with the setup using the Wii U gamepad for the whole process, btw), a window appears.
The window reads "Checking USB storage device..."There is also a spinning 'loading' wheel and a button that reads "Cancel."
However, there is no other loading bar or percentage number or any other indication that any sort of progress is being made. It gets stuck on this screen and it goes no further. In fact, it got stuck on the screen for so long the first time I tried it, that the Wii U turned itself off after a full hour of nothing getting done.
I have seen other forum posters (ex: the first guy to reply on this post --> http://techforums.nintendo.com/message/149844) say that the process can sometimes take a while (though most have reported that it took no longer than 20 minutes in their cases). In those cases, they were talking about a 1TB drive and this is a 2 TB drive, so I might expect it to take a BIT longer, but certainly not a full hour.
I have since turned the power saver function off. The system no longer automatically shuts down after an hour. However, it still cannot seem to recognize the external hard drive is even there. As far as I can tell, I have done everything right and I still cannot get past the "Checking USB storage device..." window.
Can anybody help me? Is there something I'm doing wrong? Is there an alternate way to go about this? I already spent a good hundred on this hard drive and I really don't want to spend any more than that (I will if I absolutely HAVE to, but it'd be a major pain). Please help if you can.
Thanks!
